PhilaMOCA hosts the World Premiere of Bucks County-shot horror film EYAM
On Saturday, July 21, Cinedelphia.com will present the World Premiere of the locally produced indie horror film EYAM at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art (PhilaMOCA).
EYAM is a unique horror experience. Set at a summer camp, as so many genre films are, all action and dialogue were improvised by the cast, from whom all plot points and major events were kept secret. Thus their fear is real, their reactions infectious.
On Sunday, August 5, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals will be performing a special set at PhilaMOCA as part of his second investigative concert tour of the Americas.
The first tour, which saw Gruff winding his way around South America in a search for his long lost, guitar-playing, poncho-wearing uncle, Rene Griffiths, was documented by Dylan Goch in their 2010 feature film Separado! In August 2012 Gruff – known around the world for his work with Super Furry Animals and Neon Neon, as well as his collaborations with Gorillaz, Dangermouse, Sparklehorse and Simian Mobile Disco – will be seeking out the final resting place of his relative John Evans, who left Wales in 1792 on a quest to find a mythical tribe of Welsh speaking Native Americans. Gruff will follow the path of John Evans using film, the written word, photo-story, social media and song to create an investigative road movie and album.
On Friday, July 13, the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art will host ERASERHOOD FOREVER, an art show/celebration held in honor of the building’s new Eraserhead mural (south-side exterior). The celebration will feature live performances from Full Blown Cherry and Void Vision with Lynch-themed sketch comedy from Secret Pants and Camp Woods and Twin Peaks-themed burlesque from NYC’s Francine “The Lucid Dream”. It’s exactly like it sounds: on Sunday, July 1 at 9:00 pm, the Philadelphia chapter of the internationally celebrated Naked Girls Reading event will debut at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art.
…and boy are they good! Closing out the Mausoleum Horror Convention on June 16 will be the Philadelphia Premieres of MANBORG and COMFORTING SKIN.
MANBORG (2011, Dir. Steven Kostanski, 60 min)
Half-man, half-cyborg: Manborg. Killed while battling the forces of hell, a supersoldier is brought back from the dead in order to fight an army of Nazi vampires and demons led by the nefarious Count Draculon. Cue kung-fu killing, stop-motion monster battles, hoverbikes, robots, demons, and a character named Doctor Scorpius. A self-conscious tribute to the golden age of early 90s genre cinema.
* Recent screenings include Fantastic Fest, Toronto After Dark, and Brisbane International.
COMFORTING SKIN (2011, Dir: Derek Franson, 109 min)
An emotionally fragile woman’s lonely reality is shattered when her tattoo seemingly comes to life. Offering its undying attention and otherworldly sensual pleasures, the tattoo quickly seduces, drawing her into a dangerous and all consuming bond that requires more than she may be able to give.
* Recent screenings include the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Slamdance Film Festival, and the Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam.
Both films are presented by The Awesome Fest. Showtime is 10 PM on Saturday, June 16. This double-feature serves as the closer for the Mausoleum Horror Convention, admission for the convention is $12, admission for the movies-only is $7.
The Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art (PhilaMOCA) introduces TUESDAY TUNE-OUT, a weekly night of music and movies. A local musician will take the stage every Tuesday at 8pm and will then introduce a previously unannounced film of their choice at 9pm. The screening will be preceded by an explanation as to why they chose the film and how it inspires them.
The rumors are true! The Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art naturally presents the Mausoleum Horror Convention, a one-day celebration of the wild and weird presented by Cinedelphia.com, on Saturday, June 16 (preceded on Friday by the Mausoleum Art Show of Horrors). Here’s an overview of the day’s events:
On Friday, June 15, PhilaMOCA will host The Mausoleum Art Show of Horrors curated by Jenny Dreadful as a lead in to the following day’s Mausoleum Horror Convention. But the evening isn’t completely dedicated to masterpieces of the macabre as we’ll also be hosting the North American Tour of Terror, a program of current short horror films curated by local filmmaker Matt Garrett (Beating Hearts), followed by local horror maestro Isaac Williams’ feature documentary MAYBE WE CAN GO TO HOLLYWOOD starring the late Philly punk legend Mikey Wild.
